You’ve probably seen those socks with toes, but have you ever seen a shoe with toes? This new running shoe from TopPo Atheltic is a strange looking shoe, which splits your big toe from the rest of your toes, resulting in a shoe that looks like more of a hoof than a shoe.

Its split toe design finds its roots in ancient Japan, and they’ll be available in Summer 2013.

The concept behind the new shoe is that by separating the toes, the user can make more agile use of their feet when they are running. These kinds of shoes, particularly in Japan, are used by construction workers.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen shoes like this, though. Nike have released a running shoe like this back in the 1990s, and they were known as the Air Rift. In 1951 there was also a Japanese runner who won the Boston marathon wearing tabi socks – which are the traditional Japanese split-toe shoe.
